DrayDDNS Dynamic DNS Setup

When you connect to your ISP, you are normally allocated a dynamic IP address. i.e. the public IP address of your router changes each time you connect to the ISP. This means that if you want to connect to your WAN IP Address remotely it is difficult to know what the IP might be, because the IP Address can change from time to time. The way websites handle this situation is to use a hostname instead of an IP Address, so with a site such as you don't need to know which IP Address to connect to, just the hostname.

DrayTek Vigor routers support Dynamic DNS, which links a hostname to the current IP address of the router. By using a Dynamic DNS service the DrayTek Vigor router can automatically keep the hostname record updated so that it always points to the current IP Address of the router.

DrayDDNS is a new Dynamic DNS option available for DrayTek Vigor routers, which provides a hostname from the drayddns.com domain, for instance if your Domain name prefix is companysite1 then your hostname would be companysite1.drayddns.com, which links to the router's current IP address, updating whenever it changes. The router's VPN server and any servers that are accessible on the Internet through the Vigor router can then be accessed through this address.

If the router has backup Internet connections, such as Ethernet WAN failing over to ADSL, the router's Dynamic DNS functionality can be configured to fail over as well. When configured in this way, the dynamic DNS would typically link to the main Internet connection, however if this connection drops and a fail-over occurs, the router can re-connect to the Internet using its backup ADSL connection and the DrayDDNS hostname will switch over to the backup Internet connection's IP address, ensuring that the router can always be found at its drayddns.com web address.

Support for DrayDDNS is available on vigor routers since firmware version 3.8.7 and above.

1. Go to Applications >> Dynamic DNS Setup, Enable Dynamic DNS Setup.

2. Login to Myvigor from the router’s Registration & Services page, switch to DrayDDNS, and click DDNS domain, to setup a domain name for the router.

Note: You need a myvigor user account to login to Myvigor, if you do not have one, please register one before continuing.

3. Setup the DrayDDNS profile on the router to get the new Domain name.

We can click Force Update to speed up the process. After a few seconds, the router will get the new domain name and show on the profiles list.

DrayDDNS Domain Maintenance

The DrayDDNS server will remove any registered domain that has not had its license information updated for 30 days.

The Vigor router automatically checks and refreshes the DrayDDNS license:

• Once per day
• When the router restarts
• When the WAN IP changes

If the DrayDDNS domain has not been updated for 15 or 23 days, you will receive a notification email from MyVigor. This usually occurs if the Vigor router has lost its Internet connection for an extended period.

To retain your domain entry, click the link in the notification email to manually update the domain status.

Note: Even if you have obtained a static IP address for the Vigor router, you must still renew the domain manually by following the link in the notification email.

Troubleshooting

If the issue remains, please:

• Upgrade router firmware to the latest one.
• Click Sync domain in Dynamic DNS Account Setup.
• Login to MyVigor web page. Click Force Sync on Service Status page.
• Telnet/SSH to the router CLI, ping auth.draytek.com using command "ip ping auth.draytek.com", the address should be 35.189.201.134, if the IP is wrong, please change WAN DNS server to 8.8.8.8
• Reboot the router to force router to update myvigor.

1. Before activating the DrayDDNS service, ensure the Vigor Router can connect to the Internet.

2. Go to System Maintenance > Registration & Services.

• Select the Service Status tab
• Click + Manage License & Services

3. This will take you to the login page for MyVigor. Enter your MyVigor credentials to sign in. Check if the browser blocked the pop-up window if you do not see the web page.

Note: The router must be registered to a MyVigor user account before activating the DrayDDNS service. If you do not have one, please register one before continuing.

4. Go to the DrayDDNS tab and click Activate License.

5. Read the License Agreement and click Accept.

• Select a start date for the DrayDDNS license.
• Click Next to continue.

6. Click on Activate to activate the DrayDDNS license.

7. The DrayDDNS License activation process is ongoing

8. The DrayDDNS license is generated for the router when the Service Status is displayed, as shown below.

9. Click Login to log into the Vigor Router.

• Go to System Maintenance >> Registration & Services
• Select the Service Status tab, and the DrayDDNS license status will be displayed here.
• Click + Manage License & Services to log in to MyVigor again to configure the DrayDDNS domain name

10. Log in to MyVigor and move to the DrayDDNS tab.

Click the pen icon to Edit the domain name.

Enter the domain name and click on the icon to save.

11. Click Force Sync. MyVigor will push the Domain Name info to the Vigor Router.

12. Go to Configuration / WAN,

• In the Dynamic DNS tab, click +Add to create a DDNS profile.
• Give the profile a name,
• select Enabled,
• select DrayDDNS as the provider and click Sync Domain to get the Domain Name from MyVigor

13. Click “More settings” to configure the WAN used and the IP address for the DrayDDNS profile and click Apply to save the settings.

• Update DDNS with Internet IP: Use when your router is behind a NAT device.
• Update DDNS with WAN IP: Use when your router is connected to the Internet directly and has a public WAN IP on its WAN.
• Update WAN IP mode
• Update Single WAN IP by sequence: Use when you want the domain to be updated with one WAN simultaneously.
• Update All selected WAN IPs: This option is used when you want the domain name to be updated simultaneously with more than one WAN.

14. Go to Monitoring / Log Center, Under the DDNS Log tab, check if the router has updated the DDNS successfully.
